Handmade Parade 2011

Catherine and I are looking forward to this years parade.
We will be able to watch!!

Great fun to be in it though.

Flying the Flag.

Over the past year I have had the opportunity to fly flags above the Town Hall to signify International visitors or specific events.

The 500 celebrations meant that the 500 Celebration flag was up for most of the year. Designed by Mike Barret the flag was complimented with the banners around the bridge.

The delegation from St.Pol in France, one of our Twin Towns, enjoyed a visit to join us in the 500 celebrations. A version  of Sur la Pont d'Avignon was led by the Mayor of St. Pol.

A choir and delegation came from Warstein in Germany and yes, you've guessed it, more singing on the Bridge.

A group of young people from Palestine spent a week staying in the area. I was very pleased to fly the Palestinian flag. It was quite moving to know that the young people had never seen their National Flag on a public building before.

The White Ribbon campaign flew their flag for two weeks during an action week.

The GAYLIC team had a similar week of events and the Town Hall sported their flag.

To the interest of the architects working on the Town Hall was my insistence that the new build should have two flag poles. One higher than the other. This is because the Union Flag should be higher than other national flags if flown at the same time. You have to be careful to know the Rules of Precedence.

With a month to go to as Mayor there will not be another opportunity to hoist the flag.

Watch the new Flag poles when they go up.
