Little Valley Brewery

22nd July

Being a keen beer drinker I was extremely pleased to be invited to the  Little Valley Brewery, to help celebrate its new look and the launch of its eighth bottle conditioned ale – the Python IPA.

Deputy Mayor and Mayoress of Calderdale, Coun Peter Wardhaugh and Mrs Jennifer Pearson were also at the brewery to open the event, which was attended by more than 100 representatives from the brewing industry and local businesses. During my speech, I spoke of how Little Valley had done wonders for Hebden Royd in attracting people to the area – with most of its beers named after local places and landmarks: Withens Pale Ale, Cragg Vale Bitter, Tod’s Blonde, Hebden’s Wheat, Stoodley Stout and Moor Ale. I congratulated them also on their recent 6th anniversary of being a major and successful business in our area.

World renowned beer writer Roger Protz was guest speaker at the event and remarked on the high quality of ale being produced by the brewery. The Python IPA is to feature on Mr Protz’s blog, , as his ‘Beer of the Month’ for August.

I would like to express special thanks to Wim van der Spek and Sue Cooper, owners of Little Valley, and wish them every success for the new look.

Many supermarkets and local shops have this fantastic beer range on sale and I can highly recommend it.

Concentrix Ltd

Thursday 21st July

As new Mayor of Hebden Royd I think it is vitally important to understand the activities of businesses in our area. The reason for this is two fold;
  1. In the capacity of Mayor I act as a representative to the area, therefore I believe I have a duty to promote our businesses as much as possible
  2. I have considerable International business experience and I am happy to discuss any aspect of international trade with any of our businesses in Hebden Royd
I visited a leading software and support company called Concentrix on Dean Hey business park. Concenrtix, part of the Synnex group, recently aquired Aspire and now have plans to expand their employees from 60 to 80. This is a significant employer in our area

They also have many multi - lingual employees due to their international links

Visit to Calrec Ltd, Hebden Bridge

Thursday 21st July

As new Mayor of Hebden Royd I think it is vitally important to understand the activities of businesses in our area. The reason for this is two fold;
  1. In the capacity of Mayor I act as a representative to the area, therefore I believe I have a duty to promote our businesses as much as possible
  2. I have considerable International business experience and I am happy to discuss any aspect of international trade with any of our businesses in Hebden Royd
Calderdale Council leader, Janette Battye, also attended with me to Calrec and we were met by the Managing Director Roger Henderson. We received an extremely interesting tour of the premises at Nutclough Mill, Hebden Bridge

Calrec has manufactured high quality audio products to the broadcast marketplace since 1964. They are also world leaders in this field
Throughout its history the company has focused specifically on the needs of its customers, working closely with them to develop solutions to their problems.

Both Janet and myself thoroughly enjoyed the visit and to understand that they employ around 200 people which will make it the largest employer in our area. They are also the preferred choice of many global television broadcaster's who respect their quality products.

Hebden Royd School's Kenneth Kaberry Awards

Over the weeks before the Summer holidays I held assemblies at all the schools in our area.

At all the Primary schools in Hebden Royd  I had meetings with each Head to discuss my Mayoral theme of encouraging international links, particularly with our twin towns. I have lists of potential partner schools in our twin town and links will be suggested at the start of the new school year.

Kenneth Kaberry Awards

Kenneth Kaberry was the Council Clerk from 1936 to 1986, years, a massive 50 years service to our Community !!

To mark this special event, on his retirement, the council decided to mark the long service in a special way... Kenneth Kaberry enjoyed books immensely and it was decided in a council meeting on his retirement in 1986 that each school in the area would receive an award allowance, preferably to be allocated towards books for the school library.

This year I have continued the tradition to each school in the area, I have held the assembly at each school and explained to the children the role of the council and presented the school with their cheque awards.

We also explained the importance of schools councils and the importance of democracy.

Primary schools visited in Hebden Royd were:

Burnley Road Primary School
Central Street Infant and Nursery School
Cragg Vale Junior and Infant School
Hebden Royd C.E (VA) Primary School
Riverside Junior School
Scout Road Primary School
Stubbings Infant School

During each visit, I nominated a 'Mayoress' from the school children to help with the assembly to help me. together we would present the cheque to the school. It was a fun event for the children.

This energy behind the LOCAL ECONOMY SHOWCASE, which has been organised by the Transition Town Local Economy Showcase.  It was a super event and special thanks to Dongria Khond for her extremely hard work in pulling this event together.

Coiners Barn at Bell House, Launch Event

Sunday 10th July
My son Marcus, daughter Natalie and I attended the the opening of the Coiners Barn at Bell House on Sunday.
This property has significant historical interest in Cragg Vale, dating back to the 13th Century. It was the notorious home to one of the coiners (David Hartley - who was hung in York and buried in Heptonstall )
Liz and Nathan Smith have done a fantastic job in a full redevelopment of the historic barn and we were very pleased to receive an invite to the launch.

It has been renovated in to a walkers luxury retreat / accommodation  and also acts as a  museum to the history of the building.
This building is of significant historic interest to our area. This redevelopment will help draw even more visitor interest to our area of Hebden Royd with it's fantastic diverse historic past. The coiners in Cragg Vale certainly played  a big part of our history and this building, being the home of the ring leader and one of the oldest and remotest in Cragg Vale. This superbly redeveloped site of historic interest will ensure future visitors a direct link to our extremely interesting past.

Amy, the children and I attended, on behalf of Hebden Royd, the civic service of Mayor Cllr Anthony Milne and consort Cllr Marie Milne of Mossley Parish council. The event was  a wonderful afternoon at Mossley Football club.

The weather and Pennine hills setting was fantastic with wonderful hymns, beautifully played by the Mossley Brass Band.

Also in attendance were Mayors and consorts from  Parishes of Ripponden, Saddleworth and Holme Valley.

Inspiring Hymns such as O Lord my God and Jerusalem were sung at the football ground. A wonderful solo piece, Requiem,  by Iona Fisher added to the excellent music.

Hebden Bridge and District Old People's Welfare Committee

Saturday 2nd July 2011

Amy, the children and I attended this year's Strawberry tea afternoon for the senior citizen's of Hebden Royd and surrounding parishes. This was organised by Hebden Bridge and District Old Peoples Welfare Committee.

I made a speech and talked about the how the older people in our area have contributed significantly to the fantastic area in which we live and now events like this act as a tremendous thank you for their positive contributions over the years.

Special Thanks to Mavis Ring, Rob Ward, the entire committee and extra volunteers who had clearly gone to great efforts to ensure a wonderful selection of sandwiches, cakes and strawberries and cream for all to enjoy.

We also enjoyed a super film put together by Nick Wilding from the Literary and Scientific Society. Nick is the current video librarian. The collection of films screened during Saturday's show  were made originally by the Cine section of the society between 1946 and 1957, mostly under the direction of Ken Crabtree. Nick used these archive films in and amongst the films he made here in the Calder Valley during the last decade. The unique edit from Nick on Saturday was a tribute to the people, who made the films and particularly the director, Ken Crabtree.
This fantastic collage of film clips films of our area in the past 60 years. It showed images of harsh winter in 1947, chimney's being demolished and life of local farmers  and town folk of bygone years. It was an extremely interesting delve into our fabulous past. It was also great fun and fascinating gaining insight from all the senior citizen's who attended the tea.

Please see below some of the group  that attended, left of me in the picture our eldest visitor Phyllis Walstow,97.

There were over 60 visitors from Blackshaw Head, Cragg Vale, Heptonstall, Hebden Bridge, Mytholm and Mytholmroyd. Also attending were Chair of Blackshaw Head - Dorothy Sutcliffe, Chair and Consort of Erringden - Fiona and Charlotte Gibbon and Chair and Consort of Wadsworth - John and Hazel Lynch.
