Christmas lights designed by school children - Shining Bright

December 2011

MYTHOLMROYD IS SHINING BRIGHT

The past 2 years have seen a very special challenge for our local school children, to design a Christmas light which would help Mytholmroyd to shine bright throughout the festive season.

This year there were many entries from the boys and girls from Primary schools in Cragg Vale, Hebden Bridge and Mytholmroyd, with many showing considerable artistic flair for their age . On the day of judging the Councillors had their work cut out as all the enties were wonderful and joy for the judges to look at them all. After much deliberation the winners for 2011 were picked.

Thus year's winners were Abbie Chambers of Burnley Road Academy with her Christmas Stocking Design, Ruby Fisher of Cragg Vale Junior & Infant School who designed a lovely Christmas Pudding and Finn Sierevogel Scout Road Academy with a very creative Rudolf dresses as Father Christmas.
Fabulous Designs

At the prize giving I was accompanied by Councillor Bampton Smith and Emma Housman, during my remarks I exclaimed how proud we all were in the children's designs and that their lights would be on show fo many many years. The children and their parents were obviously very proud.

Proud winners

The project has been a great success for Hebden Royd the past 2 years and is set to continue to the future, special thanks to all of the schools involved and also Emma Housman.

Next year we may hopefully see even more enties as this has really captured the hearts an minds of our local children. It is a great opportunity for the children to get involved with their area and design something that may be seen for generations.

Burnley Road Academy Christmas service

We were delighted to be invited to this years  Burnley Road Academy Christmas service.

The service was absolutely super - The full school children were in attendance and together with parents completely filled St.Michael's Church in Mytholmroyd.

We were were entertained with fantastic School choir pieces, various readings from year 6 and songs from each year group. There were also solo singers. The whole service was truly wonderful. we should not only be very proud of our children but also proud of the great schools we have in our area.

During my thank you comments  I thanked the Mrs Pam Saville, the Head, the entire staff and of course the children. I said I looked forward to the CD as the music / singing was absolutely fantastic. I also said I was extemely proud of all the children, who had clearly worked so hard,  to produce the wonderful performance.

All the Children and their parents should also be very proud indeed.

Christine Jackson retires

25th November 2011

Christine Jackson who has served Hebden Royd for over 23 years has retired.

I have been a Councillor for nearly 6 years and always found her very helpful good member of staff to work with. she had 2 roles. General support to the Council / Clerk and Mayor's secretary. She should be very proud of her fantastic service she has given the Council and  23 Mayors for these years.

This year as Mayor, I really got to know her well. She has been a 'rock' in supporting me and not only helped me in this new role. But also organised, planned and generally kept me in check with all mayor matters. For that I am very grateful and I will certainly miss her detail and 'worry' to ensure everything is OK. In the role she was a fabulous ambassader to Hebden Royd in the 100's/ 1000's times she represented the council / Mayor in communicating with both local and neighbouring Community organisations and councils. On behalf of all the past 23 Mayors - A huge thanks to you Christine !!!

From Amy and myself we wish Christine and family  a wonderful retirement and of course we will be seeing plenty of her around Cragg Vale, Hebden Bridge and Myholmroyd.

Best Wishes Christine and behalf of all current Councillors at Staff at Hebden Royd sincere thanks for your superb and valuable contribution you have made here in Hebden Royd.

The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe

This musical adventure by St Michael's amateurs was about children who entered the land of Narnia by walking into the Wardrobe. Considering they are all amateurs the level of singing, musical and acting talent was truly remarkable. All money raised was for Yorkshire Cancer care.

We truly had a great show- the Lion actally made my little girl scream with one of the big roars

Both Amy, I and the children thought that this production was fantatsic and the talent of this group compares admirably with what we have seen in theatres in Leeds and Manchester. We truly do have a pool of rich talent in our area.

Special thanks to Eric and Lesley Alston and the entire cast for a fantastic evening and we are looking forward to their next show.

Mythymroyd Christmas lights switch on 2011

Saturday 26th November 2011
This was the first time the lights had been 'officailly' switched on in Mytholmroyd in 12 years. Many people had made comments to me about a switch on in Mytholmroyd and with the various recent redevelopments in the town I felt it was important to have an official turn on this year in my tenure.

The switch on followed the Saturday Matinee St. Michaels Amateurs fantastic perfomance of the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe.

Opening Speech

200-300 people were present for what was a simply fantastic community event for Mytholmroyd.
Together with myself and Emily, the cast of The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe led the Carol singing.

Father Christmas made a second visit to Hebden Royd to the delight of the children from the schools; Burnley Road, Cragg Vale, Scout Road, Montissori and Steiner. We talked and shared fruit and sweets with them all.

Sweet Charity - Calder Valley Youth Theatre Performance

Huge thanks to the Calder Valley Youth Theatre for inviting myself and my family to the Matinee show of Sweet Charity on Saturday. We were extremely proud to represent Hebden Royd at this fantastic show of youth theatrical talent from within Hebden Royd and surrounding area.
Myself, Marcus and Emily had a great time. The show itself was unbelievable, we seriously had a fabulous time. I was totally astonished at the ability of all the performers, The singing, dancing and whole production would not have been out of place in leading theatres in Manchester or Leeds.

Congratulations to the whole cast, Producers, Directors and other officials you should all be very proud of the local talent we have in the young people of our area. I am certainly extemely proud.

We thoroughly look forward to the next production.

Hebden Bridge Bonfire

5th November 2011

I was absolutely delighted and honoured to be invited by the organisors (Hebden Bridge and District Round Table) to 'light the fire' and open this year's 51st Hebden Bridge Bonfire and firework display.

The weather could not have been more perfect. We had a dry day- so the bonfire pile was not wet- and clear and still moonlit night - perfect conditions for viewing the fabulous show.

In my opening speech I said that last year around 8000+ people had attended. Having attended last year, this year was even more !! Post event Reports say that 11000 to 12000 people attended this year - unbelievable !!!.

'Lighting' the Bonfire

The Bonfire was lit at 6-30pm and by 6-45 was roaring. At 7-00pm Neil, Emily, Compare Charlie and Myself counted down the children's fireworks.

President Neil Smith and myself after a fantastic bonfire and firework show

In recent years the Hebden Bridge and district  Round Table have tried to make the event ever more family orientated. This year I saw hundreds of happy families enjoying the event. The organisors should be very proud of a fantastic event in the calendar of Hebden Royd. During a visit to one of the rides with Emily I spoke to a couple from Stockport - this was their first time to Hebden Bridge and they exclaimed what a fantastic town and surrounding area it was - This is a truly fantastic advert for our area.

Emily enjoying one of the many family rides

The main firework event started at 8-00pm...

Another audience countdown led by Neil, Emily, Compere Charlie and Myself started the fireworks immediately. What this led to was simply  an unbelievable show that lasted for around 20 minutes.

The crowd was totally buzzing at the avalanche of fireworks together with the synchronised music which did a great job to get them crowd going. The atmosphere was truly fantastic.
In my tenure this year I have been extremely lucky to be involved with some unbelievable events and this was certainly one of the significant highlights, a night that I will not forget for a very long time!.

Having attended most of the displays in the past 10 + years this was one of the best !!

Mytholmroyd War memorial renovation

Sunday 16th October 2011

Amy and myself were absolutely thrilled to be asked to have direct involvement in the dedication and marking of respect of the renovation of our 'Mytholmroyd and Cragg Vale Soldier' in the war memorial gardens, Myholmroyd.

Well over 300 people attended the re opening and there was a procession from St Michael's church to the memorial gardens. The procession itself included the Manchester Regimet, local church representatives, Hebden Royd Town Council - including Amy and myself, our Calderdale council Mayor Cllr Nader Fekri and Helen Silvester, local schools, scouts and the local church leaders .

Rev. Cannon James Allison our local Dean led the service and which was a tremendous mix of nostalgia and respect in rememberance of our fallen from Mytholmroyd and Cragg Vale.

The Parade

In my speech I commended on the work the previous year in the garden renovation and the fact that it was opened by local war veteran Les Stewart. He was one of the last remaining survivors of the wars and sadly passed away 1 week before this years event. He would have been 96. There were very proud family members representing him on this special day.

The memorial was originally opened in July 1922 by a local man who had been badly injured in the Somme, his name was Gilbert Hartley.

The memorial itself was subject to over 90 years of the finest Pennine weather and also a vandalism attack in the 90's. Our soldier in Mytholmroyd has for many years looked 'past his best' and this refurbishment has brought him back to life... During the speech I spoke about the importance of preserving the remembrance of those difficult war years and this refurbishment will give a lasting reminder for many future generations. During the speech, I spoke of my own children remembering, their children and their children's children, well into the future

The unveiling itself was carried out by Mrs Barbera Jeffries. In my speech I said this was extremely poinent in that Mrs Jeffries was in fact Gilbert Hartley's daughter !! She exclaimed that she was extremely proud to uphold what her father had also done some 90 years ago. i also said this act was in itself and act of remembrance.

Just after the unveiling

Special Thanks to Jade Smith, Royd Regeneration and the sculptors John Swift and Andrew Bramley for this fabulous renovation of our soldier.

Hebden Bridge - Warstein Bridge named over the river Möhne

On the 8th October 2011, myself, David Parry – President of the International Group, were invited to attend the formal naming ceremony of a Bridge naming over the river Möhne in the area of Allagen in Warstein, Germany.
During my visit in June to Warstein we were approached by the Warstein Mayor Manfred Gödde that Warstein Council intended to propose a motion to name a local bridge in Warstein ‚Hebden Bridge‘ This was in recognition of the excellent relationships and strong links between the two towns said Herr Gödde.
To be honest I was totally overwhelmed, the feeling of honour in being involved in this important historical  landmark between our two towns was fantastic. I felt extremely proud that I played a direct part of a piece of history between the two towns. This feeling was also shared by others who attended from Hebden Royd.
The ceremony began with music from the Warstein Brass Band followed by a welcome speech by Herr Manfred Gödde. As a fluent German speaker, my speech was completely in german and very well received by our hosts, who consisted of Warstein Council, local residents and the local German press and of course some Cllrs and residents from Hebden Royd who had made their own way to Warstein for the celebrations.

During my speech I spoke of the history of the bridge and also expressed how proud and honoured that not only the English attendees to the event were, but also the residents of Hebden Royd at having a bridge permanently named after them.

The ceremony itself involved the Mayor of Warstein drinking Cragg Vale Beer from a special commemorative glass and myself drinking Warstein beer. We then together poured the beer onto the stone on the bridge marking the words Hebden Bridge to symbolise the naming and unity between the two towns, through the bridge connection. I also talked about the similarity of the designs of the bridges in Warstein and Hebden Royd in particular the stone pillars.

Before moving to Hebden Royd, 22 years ago I studied at University in Germany. I also lived in Germany in various areas for around 4 years. During this time I developed a love of German beer, my favorite German beer was ironically Warsteiner Pils. How proud I feel today that not only did I represent my area in this truly beautiful part of Germany, but also symbolised history with the two beers I love, Cragg Vale Brewery and Warsteiner Pils.
The naming ceremony

Two great beers: Warsteiner Pils and our own Cragg Vale Bitter

Procession over the bridge

Later in the day I took a scenic tour of the truly beautiful area around Warstein. The 'Hebden Bridge' is upstream from the famous Möhne Dam and the entire area is absolutely stunning.

Redacre Growing Project

Amy and I were privileged to open the Redacre growing spaces in Mytholmroyd on the 24th September 2011.

Due to the hilly aspects of Hebden Royd, gardens are not common to every house, most houses in the area in fact have no garden at all. This leaves many families who want to grow produce requiring allotment space.

in 2006 Eddy Beasley and Sarah Munsie had the great idea to try to convert some waste land in Mytholmroyd to good use as growing spaces for the community. The Redacre Growing project was born. This fulfilled a much needed requirement for community growing space.

During my opening speech I thanked Eddy and Sarah and also Sam and Tess Bolton, all of whom are part of the committee. In the past 2 years the committee has raised over £20,000 from LEADER, CMBC, Hebden Royd Town Council and Community Foundation to produce 20 fabulous growing spaces with another 20 planned for next year.

There was also a tree planting in the community orchard by Harry Ward, Husband of past Hebden Royd Mayor Betty Ward, The tree was planted in memory of Betty who served the community of Mytholmroyd as a Councillor for many years and sadly passed away last year

Harry pictured centre next to the Mayoress

During the speeches Rev canon James Allison suggested that next year he should hold the harvest festival church celebration at the site to welcome the harvest from the local growers.

These community spaces are a fantastic attribute to our area and Hebden Royd Town council fully supports this project.

Cragg Vale Park Opening

Saturday 10th September marked the opening of the newly redeveloped Cragg Vale Park and Community Gardens. As Mayor  of Hebden Royd, as a Cragg Vale Councillor and simply as a father of children who lives in Cragg Vale, I was absolutley delighted and honoured to be allowed to help with the opening of the newly refurbished park in my home village Cragg Vale.
Cutting the Ribbon together with the children

Cragg Vale park is a well used local facility, particularily with the children from local schools  such as the Ark, Montessori school, Cragg Vale J&I School and the Steiner school that has been in long need of investment. The park refurbishment involved school children at all the schools in Cragg Vale
The Cragg Vale Community Association was established in 2007  and two of the main objectives were:
a) to provide focal point for the community of to focus community activity in Cragg Vale,
b) to provide a local funding platform whereby community funding, from various sources could be attracted.
The Cragg Vale Community Association (CVCA) carried out various local surveys to establish community investment priorities and the park refurbishment came very high on the list. As a co-founder of the CVCA I was particularily proud the current committee had fulfilled one of it's major long term goals.
The park refurbishment met these two objectives as local feedback wanted an improved park and the Community Association used it’s powers to attract the necessary funding to make it happen
The current committee is made up of various local volunteers and they worked passionately to make the funding available and coordinate activity to turn the funding into something the local area would enjoy for future generations.
This regeneration is testament to the fantastic community that we have here in Cragg Vale and the sheer number of people who want to get involved to make the area in which we live better. This involvement is entirely voluntary and is and is admired and respected.
The CVCA has now grown significantly to become a major part of the local community, with many active volunteers, a quarterly local newsletter, community website, local History group and carbon neutral forum and many organised events throughout the year
There will be new projects to  look forward to the  including refurbished shelter and tree sculptures

A really fun day out

Hebden Bridge Vintage Weekend

Sunday 7th August 2011 Vintage weekend
Amy, myself and the children attended Hebden Bridge's Vintage weekend on 7th August, organised by local volunteers in The Rotary Club.
Calder Holmes Park was completely full with a staggering array of vehicles from the past. We were delighted to see over 600 entries into this spectacular event of classic and vintage Cars, Motorcycles, Commercial vehicles and military vehicles. Our children also loved it and it was a fabulous family afternoon. we were delighted to see many of the entrants had travelled from all over the UK to visit this event in our area. The event itself attracted thousands of people into the Park in Hebden Bridge.

During my speech I talked about this the 29th Vintage weekend and how it had grown over the years to be one of the biggest events in the area's calendar. I also met 2 of the original founders from 1983, John and Mary Rushworth who were still exhibiting during this years show. As a qualified Engineer myself, I  said I have a shared passion for our Mechanical and Ingenuity heritage which was in our park over the entire weekend.
All the vehicles were extremely well presented and we also talked to a number of owners. The passion and stories connected with each of their collections was fascinating and I stressed in my speech that the whole event was a complete success due to the Entrants and their fantastic Vehicles.
Congratulations and thanks also for  the tremendous efforts from the organisers; Roger Benn, the President of the Rotary Club, Peter Layfield and the entire Rotary committee and produced yet another remarkable team effort in to ensure this event ran smoothly also raising significant amounts for local charities.
Roger Benn, President and myself

The thousands of visitors, many of whom had travelled from outside. not only benefited local charities but also the local businesses and local economy. Amy and myself talked to many visitors during the days and they all loved the event and would come and visit our area again.
Our children also had a great day; I asked the children to reflect on their day; my son Marcus (9) liked the American cars - in particular the 1957 Plymouth Savoy which was able to produced flames from it's exhaust !!. My wife liked the bubble cars but also enjoyed the vintage section. My two young girls (6 and 4) liked the restored Post office vans - these old vans were however proper 'Pat' vans, perfectly restored, even with the cat 'Jess' in the passenger seat.

The children loved the the 'bubble' car

Personally I enjoyed all  the vehicles and the passion of the owners and their individual stories was the best bit for me.
